REMOTE TEACHING AND LEARNING

Hello to all my PK families.

We are about to embark on an unexpected journey that we are calling “Remote Teaching and Learning.”  It’s the ultimate collaboration of home and school!  My goal is to support your child’s sense of well-being, grow their thinking and create opportunities for them to feel a sense of meaningful connection with their classmates (and teachers) through the coming weeks.

Since spring break began, we’ve been brainstorming what’s left in the curriculum for this year and researching online resources for additional ideas that will engage your child and support their continued growth and development.

As we plan for the weeks ahead we would like to hear your thoughts and build around what will best work for your family.  Please email me your responses to the questions below.

1.     How has your child responded to the idea that they are not returning to school after Spring Break, but will be “doing school” at home?

2.     What (if any) discoveries have you already made that you’re finding support your child’s learning and connection to others?

3.     Who will be with your PK child Monday through Thursday mornings, providing the learning support?

4.     What time in the morning do you anticipate starting your “school” day?

5.   Where in your home is there a place you can designate as their school spot/desk to keep their supplies?

6.     What else do you think I need to know?

The envelope has their journal, 3 coloring sheets of their animal, a bird identification sheet and a bird behavior sheet.  Please let your child know these are to stay in their school spot until we need them.

Do you have these items at home for your child to use?
Scissors, tape/glue, white paper, colored paper, pen, pencil, markers/colored pencils, playdough, blocks or lego.  Please don't worry if you don't, I am just trying to find out what everyone does have.

I am viewing this experience as an adventure, and will encourage your child to think of it the same way.    On Monday I am hosting a meeting at 9:00 a.m. via zoom to answer questions and share information. I will record the meeting for those that are not able to attend.

On Tuesday I am looking forward to trying to connect with the whole class for a morning meeting.

See you at the meeting Lisa Small

ELLA's 5TH BIRTHDAY

Our class is working on learning each others animals in Spanish.  Today we played 'Find the animal'.

Ms. Lane introduced 3D with cardboard pieces.  The class learned how to make a piece stand up using paper tape.

We continued working on clay self-portraits.

Ending our morning by celebrating Ella's 5th birthday.

QUESTIONS
What is la mariposa? (clue: It flies and iBeatrix is studying this animal)
How do you make paper tape?

LEARNING ABOUT DAKOTA PEOPLE AND NOLAN'S BIRTHDAY

Brit, Nolan's mom came and gave a presentation with Nolan's help and shared about their families culture.

Brit showed us a pipe that is used in special ceremonies and the end of the pipe is made from stone collected from Pipestone national park.

Nolan wears his regalia when he attends a 'Wacipi' (translation 'they dance').   A Wacipi is open for anyone to attend,  it is a lot of fun to watch all the children and adults dancing together in their regalia and the different types of dances.

The outfits have a lot of beadwork on them which are all sewn by hand by Brit or family members.

They brought in lots of items for us to look at and to gently touch.
(below first image it should say Shawl)

After learning about Nolan's family and the Dakota culture we celebrated Nolan's 6th birthday before starting work choices.

A few more friends managed to create their clay self-portraits before we went to P.E.

We began reading 'Living color' by Steve Jenkins.  We only read about the color red and had just started the color blue.  The book explains different ways animals use colors.

QUESTIONS
What shapes do you remember seeing on Nolan's regalia?
What image was on Nolan's medallion around his neck?
Can you remember why some of the animals were red?

MARIONETTES,8TH GRADE BUDDIES AND VALENTINA'S BIRTHDAY

MONDAY 9TH FEBRUARY

PK and K attended a Marionette show performed by the middle schoolers.  They acted out three stories, Stone soup, The Magic Paintbrush and Anansi and the moss covered rock.

Our class had a discussion about predators and prey, what those words mean and which one their animal was, or was it both?

At the end of the morning our 8th grade buddies visited and helped us cut out animal pictures.  They could find any animal pictures they liked and cut them out.  We will start working on finding pictures of their specific animal as the week progresses and look at ways their animals are the same and different.

QUESTIONS
What animals did you cut out ?
Is your animal a predator, or prey, or both?

TUESDAY 10TH MARCH

SeƱor Geffen  printed out images of our animals and told us their names in Spanish.

Then he read us a book called 'De la cabeza a los pies' (From head to toe) which included some of the animals our class are studying.

The class had fun copying the actions of the animals.

We began work on self portraits in clay today.  Reminding the class of the 3 'S' words MS. Lane taught us that help clay pieces stick together, scratch, slip and smush.

Before P.E. we celebrated Valentina's 6th birthday with a delicious  treat.  It will be a birthday rich week as we have 2 more birthdays to celebrate before Friday.

QUESTIONS
What does scratch, slip and smush mean when using clay?
Can you remember one of the animals from the book in Spanish?
