HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Today was a community day so we could celebrate Halloween together.  Children helped prepare the jack-o-lanterns by scooping the insides out.

We placed both of them in the haunted bathroom along with a boney friend.

While I had lots of help making pumpkin cookies.

We ended the morning singing songs and tasting the delicious cookies.   Tomorrow will be just as exciting.  We will have another community day as Valentina's parents Juan and Christian will be coming in to share how they celebrate Día de los Muertos, Day of the Dead.

QUESTIONS
Can you tell me one ingredient that went in to the cookies?
What gift did Luca give everyone?

PUMPKIN FACES

We have two large pumpkins in our classroom, one for each class.  That left us with an important decision to make, what type of face do we want to carve.  Each child drew a pumpkin and made decisions as to what shape they wanted the eyes, nose and mouth, using shape tracers when needed.

Drawing the pumpkin faces helps our students think about, and decide, what their personal preference is, giving them  a clear idea of what shape they vote for. After the drawings were complete we looked at them and voted on what we would carve tomorrow.

The winner for the eye shape was 4 votes for circles and 4 votes for triangle.
Luca had the idea that we could put the two together and have a circle with a triangle in the middle.

This might be a good time to let Mr. Billadeau know he will be carving the pumpkin face.😊

The winner for nose shape, was triangle and the smiley mouth was a clear winner with 11 votes.
No one wanted ears but they did agree on eyebrows.

Before P.E. we read 'Kitty and dino' by Sara Richard.  A fun story with very few words about how a dinosaur and a kitty became friends, even though they are so different they learn to get along.

QUESTIONS

What shapes did you choose for your pumpkin drawing?
What ways were Kitty and Dino the same and different?
What shapes did you vote for?

THANK YOU CARDS AND CORN STALKS

We began our morning with Ms Fanucchi teaching us a Halloween song.

Followed by work choices, everyone had to come over and write a Thank you card to Farmer Scott and Eric.

Even more Halloween fun.  Our 8th grade buddies visited and helped us make masks and crowns.

TUESDAY

After Spanish we all did a still life drawing of a corn stalk, looking closely at the different parts of the stalk and what they are called.  The children had to write at least one word to label their drawing.

We listed the tassel, corn, cob, kernel, leaves, stalk, and roots.
We will display these drawings in the stairwell this week.  If you didn't notice we have also displayed the family drawings in the classroom.

We ended our morning with a discussion about rough housing.  A large section of our PreK community enjoy rough housing and wrestling, it is not gender exclusive, boys and girls enjoy and benefit from playing.

We felt a discussion was needed to make sure everyone understood roughhousing.  While it is good for our bodies and minds, we need to understand the rules.

Q: What does rough-housing mean?
Luca: It’s when people are pushing, and they’re fighting.

Q: Do you mean to really hurt someone or are you just playing?
Luca: Just playing.

Q: How do you play safely?
Evy: You need room.
Nolan: If you’re doing sword fighting, you need a paper sword.
Margot: You just fight with your swords (not bodies).
Luca: You can’t kick people.

Q: What happens if you do accidentally push someone over?
Margot: You say, “Are you ok?”
Evy: You say, “Do you want a hug?”
Grace: You could hug them.

Luca: What if you accidentally pushed them onto a wall?
Grace: Get an ice pack for them?

Q: What if you see someone hurt?
Margot: You could say, “Are you ok, do you need an ice pack?”
Luca: You could go get a teacher?
Nolan: You could say sorry.
Margot: Then you could just take a break from playing with them.
Austin: You could ask if they want a hug or an ice pack.

We talked about rules for sword-fighting and wrestling and did some demos, discussing how you
stop if you accidentally hit someone, or when you finish tackling someone you stop, and let them
get up. We will continue this discussion all week looking at ways we control our body and use
'safe words', to tell the other person to stop.

We also  read 2 short stories,  Sophie gets angry deals with a strategy that Sophie uses to help her calm down.  The Bear who shared, makes two new friends by sharing.

In the weeks ahead we will also start to discuss emotions and feelings and take a closer look at ways we can control them.  After reading the books we briefly discussed what you do when you feel angry.

Q: What do you do when you feel angry?
Margot: I play something else that doesn’t make me angry.
Evy: I go up to my room by myself.
Beatrix: I hug my stuffy.
Leonard: When I get mad, I eat.
Grace: I play music.
Beatrix: I listen to Hamilton.

Nolan was showing us child’s pose, another good strategy.

If you are looking for more information about roughhousing I would recommend a book by Anthony DeBenedet called The art of roughhousing.

QUESTIONS
What did you draw on your Thank you card?
What did you make with your 8th grade buddy?
What word or words did you add to your corn stalk drawing?
Can you explain what roughhousing means?
What did Sophie do to help her calm down when she got angry?

HOESE FARM

Here are a few things we learned while at the farm.

Heifers are girl cows that haven't had babies yet.

They have 260 cows at the farm.

One cow produces about 9 gallons of milk.

The big metal container holds 2500 gallons of milk.

They feed the cows corn, soybeans and grass.

All of their milk is taken to Bongards creameries.

here is a link to a short video of the farm. The file for the video was so large I had difficulty working out how to attach it to blogger.  Mr Billadeau came to the rescue today with the option below.

'M' WORDS

'M' words were our focus  today.  I requested that each child find 3 'M' words in the classroom,  it could be an object or a word they see. They could decide if they wanted to draw the item or write the word. Some friends did both.

There was still a lot of excitement around the Doctor's office.  The children  soon realized we had a lot of Doctors and not many patients.  Problem solving that situation we came up with a solution, ask the other class if they would be our patients.

It didn't quite work out the way we had planned.  At first we ended up with even more doctors, until a few children realized how much fun it was to be a patient.

At the end of the morning we read "You get what you get' by Julie Gassman.  The story is about a squirrel called Melvin, he does not like his teachers favorite rule, "You get what you get and you don't throw a fit."

Continuing our work on community building and friendship we looked at this picture and discussed what was happening.

Q: What do you see happening in the picture?
Fang: There’s five kids playing, and one kid is upset.
Margot: I think they’re playing, but they’re not letting her play.
Grace: They’re not including her.
Margot: They’re not letting her play with them.
Grace: Maybe they’re being mean to her?

Q: What do you think the kids might be saying that might be making the girl sad?
Nolan: I don’t like you.
Margot: I’m not gonna be your friend.
Evy: You can not play with us.
Austin: Stop that!
Fang: I don’t want you to play with us.
Grace: You’re the meanest kid.

Q: How could they solve the problem?
Margot: They could ask a grown up.
Nolan: They could give her a hug and say “Sorry”
Fang: They could say “Are you ok?”

Q: What could you do if you see someone like this?
Grace: You could go play with them! The welcome rule.
Evy: You let people play with you.

QUESTIONS
What did Melvin the squirrel do at home that he did not do at school?
Do you remember any of the 'M' words you found in the classroom?

REMINDER Tomorrow the weather forecast predicts around 40F and cloudy, please make sure
they have all their outdoor gear and rain boots ready for a fun trip to the farm.
