This turned out to be tricky for some friends as yesterday afternoon Luca and Austin started to play restaurant in dress-up, specifically "Raku', and there was a lot of interest.
It is usually a slow process for some friends, moving out of their comfort zone. If we introduce the premise now, then by February/March friends will have had time to get use to the challenge.
We did not go outside today as the windchill temperature was below minus ten degrees fahrenheit. Thankfully we had P.E. today giving us a chance to exercise a bodies.
We read 'The grouchy ladybug' by Eric Carle,.
We also looked at some images of children that were angry and discussed what was going on in the image.
Q: How is this person feeling?
Fang: Angry
Evy: Somebody’s playing something that he doesn’t want to.
Q: What’s his body doing that is showing us he doesn’t want to do something?
Austin: (showing us his arms crossed)
Margot: He’s making an angry face.
Fang: Closing his eyes.
Q: What about this picture of a girl sitting in front of some food ?
Luca: She’s angry about eating her food.
Grace: (showing us her eyes squinting like the girl)
Ike: She doesn’t want to eat her dinner. She wants to eat her dessert.
Q: What about this picture of two kids playing? Are they both angry?
Nolan: No, the boy is.
Luca: He needs some more pieces, but she’s taking all of them.
Nolan: He’s going to run out. He could say, “Can I have some more please?”
Q: How about this girl in her room?
Luca: She has to clean her room (so she’s angry)
Grace: (showing hands on her hips like the girl)
Margot: (showing on her face how the girl’s face looks all scrunched up)
Luca: Maybe she was so angry that she threw her stuff everywhere and now she’s gotta clean it all up.
Q: Why do you think this boy is angry? (Boy sitting on the couch, arms crossed)
Luca: Maybe he’s watching a show he didn’t want to watch?
Beatrix: Maybe he’s watching TV but they turned it off?
Fang: Maybe he was trying to watch TV but the movie was cancelled?
Grace: Maybe he’s waiting for something but it didn’t come?
Q: What do you do when you’re feeling really angry?
Margot: My mommy and daddy tell me to go up to my room. Sometimes I read books, and sometimes I play school.
Solveig: Sometimes I go up in my room and put the covers over me.
Beatrix: I snuggle with my stuffy.
Nolan: I hide until I feel better.
Beatrix: Run
Ike: When I get angry, I run.
Evy: I run around for a little bit and then I go up in my room.
Beatrix: I watch TV, too.
It was an interesting conversation, friends identified with the reasons for being angry and came up with a lot of good ideas for helping them.
We also had time to create 2 more plays One was Evy's story of the 3 little butterflies and the big bad bee. The other was Ike's story of the 3 little dinosaurs and the big bad T-rex. I have made a new file on google drive which will have all the plays in, rather than me making a new file for each play. If you have difficulty with access, let me know and I can connect you.
