YOGA

We had a special visitor today. Ms Colleen Evon, a yoga teacher, she taught us a lot of yoga poses which we will use throughout the year.  Ms Evon offers after school yoga at The Blake School.  If you are interested in your child attending her classes I will post further information at the end.

After yoga we discussed the interest that some friends had about space and looked at pictures of astronauts.   Some friends were surprised to see female astronauts.

You may of heard of the term 'Have to', which we use in Pre-k.  It refers to a work choice that students have to come over and do at some point in the morning.  Model magic was a 'Have to'.
A large group of students were interested in coming over straight away.

Some of the children made planets, the sun, spaceships and ufo's. While others made volcanoes, lollipops, s'mores, unicorns etc.

Some stayed for a short time, others stayed most of the morning.  Tomorrow they will be given the option of painting their creations as well as having the opportunity to work on a collaborate art project with Celluclay.(crushed newspaper which is sticky when wet allowing us to easily add other materials to our creation) I can't wait to find out what they decide to made together.

We read a couple of pages from The Solar system by Howard K. Trammel.  Focusing on the sun and the planets in our solar system.

Here is a sample of some of the questions that were asked, showing their knowledge and curiosity.

Does anyone know what gravity is?
Fang:"Gravity is something that keeps things together."
What would happen if we didn't have gravity?
Luca:"We would float around."
What do you know about the planets in our solar system.?
Beatrix: "The sun is so hot."
What do you know about the Earth?
Fang:"The Earth has life."

Questions that the students asked and we discussed
Grace:"Why does the Earth have dots on it?"(clouds)
Beatrix:"Why do some astronauts jump on the moon?"
Margot:"What is the green on the Earth?"
Fang:"What is the gold part?(clouds over the north pole)

If that wasn't enough activity for our brains we went on to discuss rules we should have for our classroom to make sure everyone feels, WELCOME, RESPECTED and SAFE.   We will continue adding to our list of rules throughout the week and post our final copy on the wall in our classroom.

We completed our morning with yoga poses.  I was impressed by how many positions they remembered.

QUESTIONS
Can you show me one new yoga pose you learned today?
What did you create with model magic?
Do you remember any of the classroom rules?
