HOW MANY WAYS CAN YOU MAKE A HEXAGON?

At morning meeting we all tried to find more than one way to make a hexagon shape.  We looked closely at a hexagon and how many sides it has.  Then using triangles, rhombi and trapezoids we made our own hexagon.

Q: What shape is this called?

Fang: A hexagon.

Q: How many sides does it have?

Fang: 6!

We discussed the difference between 3D and 2D.

Fang: That one’s flat and that one’s not flat.

Evy: Thin and thick

We discussed what we should add to our construction site?
Grace:"A truck.'
Evy:"We could use cardboard."
Beatrix:"Cardboard, and then color the cardboard."
Luca:"Maybe we could build a blender out of cardboard - like a cement truck mixer."
Grace:"Paint, we could make it out of brown paper and then paint it white."

We found items from the invention center to create trucks and cement mixers.  Friends worked on individual little trucks . If anyone does have an enormous box that they don't need, we would be willing to take it off your hands.  Then we can create a large cement truck.

We read Where's the big bad wolf? by Eileen Christelow.  The wolf is hiding but a very strange sheep is hanging around telling the 3 pigs to build straw and stick houses.

Tomorrow we will start creating our own story around the theme of the 3 little pigs.  When we asked the class for their ideas these are what they came up with.

Evy:"3 butterflies and the big bad bee."
Beatrix:"3 tooth fairies and the big bad fairy."
Grace:"3 robots and the big bad owl."
Leonard:"3 robots and the big bad bird."
Ike:"3 dinosaurs and the big bad t-rex."
Austin:"3 aliens and the big bad robot."
Nolan:"3 pumpkins and the big bad skeleton."
Valentina:"3 princesses"
Fang:"3 t-rex's and the big bad gigantosaurus."
Solveig:"3 fairies and the big bad dinosaur."

We will brainstorm more ideas before making our final story choices in the morning.
