JOURNALS

Journals are a great way for children to communicate their thoughts and ideas.  A child may have an idea for a story, or want to draw a picture of something they are excited about, or had fun doing.  It is also another way for them to communicate their emotions or feelings about a situation.

Prompts are another way we use journals.  An example of this is around Thanksgiving, we ask, what  are your grateful for?  and ask them to draw a picture representing it.

This morning the children were asked to decorate the cover of their journal before completing a prompt.

The prompt was to write their name and the date which they copied from a sentence strip.

A lot of children were so excited to receive their journal they decided to draw at least one picture, some drew two or three.  The class wanted to take their journals home straight away.  We discussed the rules surrounding journals which are as follows:

1. We keep our journal at school.
2. We can use our journal whenever we want to during work choice time.
3. Draw or write, no scribbling.
4. Always look for the first clean page, so we don't waste paper.

Some friends were very concerned about having to leave their journal at school.  I reassured them that at the end of PreK they would be able to take them home.  Luca helped explain to the rest of the class by telling them, "It will be more than 100 days."

QUESTIONS
Do you remember one of the rules for your journal?
How many 'F' words did you find this week?
What letter are you working on next week?
