I introduced patterns by using green and white unifix cubes making an AB pattern.
If a child has a good grasp of AB patterns I will challenge them to do a more complicated pattern.
A lot of our students took the challenge.
While looking at patterns I decided we would take a closer look at geometric shapes. On our challenge table I asked them to find 1 trapezoid, 2 rhombuses and 3 triangles.
We started the first of many versions of the 3 little pigs. The idea is to look at the same story told by different people and how they are similar and different. This one is by Barry Moser
After reading the 3 pigs we had a brief conversation about being a friend and what a bully looks like.
Q: What is a bully?
Grace: Bad, they’re being mean to you.
Beatrix: Someone who picks on little kids.
Nolan: Or who punches them.
Grace: Or kicks them.
Q: What could you do if this happens?
Margot: Say stop.
Beatrix: Tell the teacher.

Q:What would you do if you saw this happening to one of your friends?
Evy: Stand up for them.
Nolan: You could go and hug the bully and say “You look like you need a hug”.
Leonard: Maybe he didn’t have enough love. (told an anecdote about a time that he saw a bully who maybe didn’t have enough love).
Beatrix: You can say, “I’m sorry that happened”.
QUESTIONS
What happened to the wolf at the end of the story?
What pattern did you make?
Can you remember one of the new signs you learned in music, with Ms Fanucchi?
I have more pictures to download but for some reason I am having difficulty adding them to the blog. I will add them to tomorrows blog.
