EYES AND NOSES

Tried to get this post out yesterday but had internet issues.

This morning we looked at the photos of our eyes and we were able to identify everyone. We noticed how many people had brown eyes and blue eyes.  We have a lot of people in our class with brown eyes. I think tomorrow might be difficult, Solveig was our photographer of the day, and her job was to take photos of peoples noses.

Everyone completed their playdough faces and of course they all had to pose with their self-portrait.

Next week we will create our faces using model magic and collage materials.

The other class created a music band, some of our class joined and they sang Baby Shark for the audience.

Toward the end of the morning we read Martin's Big Words by Doreen Rappaport.    This is the first of a few books we will read about Martin Luther King Jr.

Before reading the book:

MS SMALL: Does anyone know why we have Monday off school? No response
MS SMALL: Does anyone know who this is a picture of?
FANG: Martin Luther King Junior.
ELLA:"It's his birthday."

MS.SMALL: "What did Martin Luther King Junior do?"
FANG: "He protected the world."
LEONARD:"Teaching peace."
In the book there was a sign that said 'White only' on it
FANG: "That means people with white skin only. Not me."
NOLAN: "You're white."
FANG:"I think I'm yellow."

MS.SMALL:"Only love can drive out hate." (passage from the book)
LUCA:"What does that mean?"
FANG:"It's because love makes you feel good."

We read about Rosa Parks and bus segregation
MS SMALL:"What do you think about that rule?
LUCA: "Angry! and I have colored skin."

I discussed how our Welcome, Respect and Safety rules connect to Martin Luther King Jr.'s message.  Our conversations will continue as we read more books about his life.

Due to the cold weather we went to the large hallway and played some games with Mr.Andrews class.  Then returned to the classroom to do another play.
